Limnos Sediment Sampler

This device is a reshaped model of the 20 years old Limnos sampler, which is widely used by sedimentologists in Scandinavia and Germany and which has been sold to 20 countries.

The Limnos sediment sampler provides an excellent way to take samples from soft sediments and a unique method ti slice the sample in layers. The sampler is also suitable for use in difficult conditions at sea, as its construction is presently very robust.

The sampler sinks down whilst it is completely open and allows the free passage of water, thus preventing any pressure impact which could disturb the layers of sediment (Fig. 1).

The bottom of the sampler closes within the sediment and the whole weight of the device ensures that the valve ramains closed.

A container tube of acrylic plastic has been set within the steel tube (Fig. 2-3). As well as providing the weight, the steel tube operates as a dust cover.

The container tube consists of a series of acrylic plastic rings which are placed on top of one other. The standard slicing tube consists of 60 rings, each 1 cm high. The inner diameter of the rings is 94 mm and the wall 3 mm. It is also possible to use high rings which are e.g. 5 cm or 10 cm in the sampler. An unsectioned 60 cm long tube is suitable for use towards using the sampler for benthic organisms as well as studying the water layers above the sediments. The acrylic plastic tube, which is used, is a standard material and the selection of the tube can be replenished by the user.

The Limnos sampler also provides a good method for taking undisturbed samples directly into the incubation tubes for studies in the laboratory.

The lifted sampler is placed on an even base and its hinged side is opened. Slicing is performed by drawing the ring with the sediment material on the special steel plate (Fig. 4). There is an extra tool available to aid draving. It is also possible to draw more than one ring at the same time.

The metal parts of the sampler are made of stainless steel (AISI 316). The total weight of the sampler is 9 kg. If necessary, the use of additional weights is also possible. The whole length of the sampler is 81 cm and the outer diameter of the frame tube is 108 mm. The greatest breadt of the device is 155 mm.

The price of the Limnos sediment sampler is 2400 EUR (FCA Turku, Finland) including the frame, a slicing tube with 60 rings, slicing equipment and transport casing. Please also request additional information on other combinations of rings.
